Funny that 3 of Michael Cimino’s 7 films have protagonists named Michael, and 3 of those other ones have real people as protagonists. That name haunted this viewing for me, a viewing that more clearly than ever revealed to me what a thorny, unlikable protagonist this film has. Seemingly entertaining and original film, but I’m not sure what it’s in service of. Charlie Kaufman bragging about how self aware he is? A good reminder that being cheerful and kind is a beautiful trait, and being solipsistic and spiteful isn’t a sign of intelligence nor a virtue. Vaguely relatable movie.
