Ignoring for a moment that Mary Poppins Returns is sheer torture...

The story completely redeems and justifies the first Mr. Banks, and proves that Mary Poppins herself is little more than a gateway to squalor.

I’m not sure I’ve ever so hated and loved a movie.

The script, dialogue, and subplots — and the jokes — are a wreck

...and how much exposition can be crammed into every other sentence?

...and how many times can Mamoa flip his hair in slo-mo?

...and how many “surprise” explosions can be fit into a movie before you can set your clocks to them?

...and now who are THESE creature people now?

Buuuut... dazzling colors and SFX — and not at all boring — and Julie Andrews — and the deeper societal meanings...

    So there’s that.

    I didn't think I would, but I loved it.

The first twenty minutes or so, I cringed a few times, thinking it was going to be too clever, too cute, and too precious for its own good.

But even my cynical, hard-hearted self soon melted with the realization that the intelligence, depth, and charm were all legitimate and sincere.

I left the theater with a full heart and am confident "Love, Simon" will remain with me as one of my favorites of this new film year.
