This is a rare time that I thought PTAmissed the mark. The characters are mostly likable and the soundtrack was good. All together, I don't see a point to this movie other than PTA honoring his favorite people and favorite era.

Let it be known that this is perhaps the Coen film since 2004's "The Ladykillers" in which two Black actors talked to each other.

The thing with horror movies is that in a sick, gruesome way, they are a form of escapism. What happens in them can’t possibly happen in real life. The plot, the mayhem and the monsters are scary enough to provoke emotion while still feeling distant from what’s unfolding on the screen. “Hereditary” is not one of those movies; you will need something else to escape from this.

My grandmother became a nurse in New York City around this time. She was newly divorced, raising three kids on her own. In between going to school, she was cleaning doctor's offices and chasing her wild offspring. Being a black nurse where she was freshly on her own and barely 30 was tough. Watching "I Am Somebody" magnified that 10 times over for me. It would have been even harder had she stayed in the South.
