Very interested to see the second part when this airs in full on HBO in March, but this was a rigorous and important piece of filmmaking.
Not important in the way we say about art just because it strikes a cord, but important in actual practical reality because the man who raped and violently abused Evan Rachel Wood and others is still operating unchecked and no doubt pursuing other victims.
I've been a fan of Evan since I was veryโ€ฆ

For me, Macbeth favours the visceral and this adaptation was too much of a single sustained note when I wanted building thunder.
I can and will watch Denzel do anything for any amount of time, and obviously there's some really nice visual stuff going on here and everything to do with the witches fucks, but it felt a bit flat to me.
I get what was being done here, but I'm more likely to return to Justin Kurzel's version.

The most "this was written by a man" text maybe ever.
The film is fine but Arthur Miller's screenplay and story on the whole misses the fact that misogyny was at the heart of the witch trials in Salem and anywhere else, and instead of highlighting this The Crucible deifies a man who cheated on his wife then painted his mistress as a whore.
And a moment before the end his wife begs for forgiveness?
    For what? Being too cold?
    Phew that's some bullshit.
A waste of a great Winona but again that's on Miller not the film.

"That's what people will forget, that it was so much fun"

I was really, really looking forward to this so believe me when I say it irks me more than it irks you to see my rating be so low.
If this series resonated with you then great, and if it made you want to combat stigma and misinformation around HIV and AIDS then even better, but despite its real historical significance I think it falls far below the highโ€ฆ
