A perfect example of storytelling. The plot unfolds beautifully and slowly, in a way which I can't say I've seen before. The cinematography is flawless (as is usually the case in Samurai films of the era), some of the most gorgeous photography going around. Terrifically shot, by the man who couldn't help but capture iconic images. The night scenes come up beautifully, bright faces against black skies. You really feel the moral failing of the officers as their strategies are not informed by conditions on the ground but their own ambition. It's a captivating and moving film and it doesn't even crack the 90min mark.
