    On the Waterfront

Powerful, crisply shot masterpiece filled with stunning details, incendiary performances, beguiling music score, teriffic editing. It has a perfect script, filled with wonderful dialogue. It is absolutely still relevant thanks to its universal themes on masculinity, politics, religion, familial bonds (and lack thereof). It serves as a convincing argument for the importance of unions, workers’ rights, and the need for communication and community.

    Elevator to the Gallows

Louis Malle made this assured, mature, thrilling, gripping black comedy drama at *24*, which is just insane to me. Opening with a stunning "perfect murder" that's like Alfred Hitchcock doing Mission: Impossible, the film then zooms out to show the repercussions from a stupid mistake the murderer makes, encompassing many characters like a snow ball getting larger as it rolls done a hill, until it reaches an abyss.

Crisply photographed and accompanied by a beautiful jazz score from Miles Davis.…

    "Move it, amateurs!"

Yup I rewatched this only a few days after rewatching - I think Scream 4 might be the most comforting of the series to watch somehow; despite how mean and gruesome it is, it's also slick and pacy and *fun*.

This'll have to tide me over until I get an opportunity to see Scream (5) hopefully in a couple weeks time.

    "Is he dead?"
    "Very."

Though I think I now slightly have Scream and Scream 4 ahead, for the longest time Scream 3 was my favourite film of the series. This boils down mostly to the fact that there is a lot of Gale Weathers, my favourite character, plus in Parker Posey, we have a *second* Gale Weathers! (And Posey expertly captures Courteney Cox's mannerisms). I've seen Scream the most times, but that's very quickly followed by Scream 3.

    End of the Century

You explore a new city with a friend you just made - maybe 'friend' is taking it too far since you've just met and in less than ideal circumstances, but for the moment it seems that you will be friends. You walk through cobbled streets, admire paintings, take in ancient sculptures, eat bread and cheese, drink wine from a box. You feel alive. You share tequila straight from the bottle. You share a cigarette even though you don't really smoke,…

"You know... You just sit there doing nothing... Propping up the entire world."

A beautiful film that's first and foremost about love, and the complex moral and emotional and human issues it explores second. Colin Firth's best performance to date, and Stanley Tucci natural and easy and the perfect counterpoint to all the inner, suppressed feelings and emotions. The screenplay breathes life. Heartfelt, warm, thoughtful, quietly stunning.

    "Let me go with you."
