I really love and appreciate the ongoing themes of generational trauma, dysfunctionality, accepting your flaws, and general "unfucking your head" that has been cropping the last decade or so of Disney/Pixar films. The 90's Renaissance was great, but those movies were telling different kinds of narratives, more traditional heroes journeys. The modern era of Disney feels like it was more heavily influenced by the story of a broken family that was introduced in Lilo and Stitch.

Everyone's talking about the shoes and how pretty the rain is, but I think the high point of this film is it's quietness, it's stillness. It's a relaxing film, a lonely film, one that I can relate to. Not in the least because I've lived in Japan. One that I recommend to anyone who has had those moments of just sitting somewhere, or walking alone, wishing that they had someone to talk to. It's hard to explain, but I feel like this movie just gets me.
