    The zaniness of the animation is proper delicious; the rather pedestrian character arc business is just too much the stuff of a kids film to engage me overly much.

    As compelling a portrait of the devil and his insidious cunning as I've seen, with a good dose of patience and virtue thrown in. But perhaps it's a bit too arty and highbrow to really get sucked into, on a first watch anyway.

    I had only heard of this film, and only watched it, for the sake of sating my IMDb top 250 obsession. So much better than I expected! But also not really one of the 250 greatest films of all time. But some outstanding performances, and a decent balance of observation,  action, comedy and pretentiousness. Reckon Martin McDonagh could do a rather nifty English language remake, if such a thing were called for, it has that In Bruges vibe (only 15 years earlier!)

    I can't in good conscience call this a bad film, but I just didn't care.

    I don't care that it's exquisitely crafted using natural lighting.
    I don't care that it recreates 18th century settings with meticulous accuracy.
    I don't care that Kubrick manipulates a cleverly chosen piece of classical music to set a mood and then play around with it.
